Etymology: In α. forms < Yiddish milkhik < milkh milk n.1 + -ik -y suffix1. Compare German milchig resembling milk, milky (15th cent. as †milchecht ). In β. forms < Yiddish milkhedik, probably an alteration of milkhik after e.g. lebedik alive ( < Middle High German lebendic : see lively adj.).In forms with final -e reflecting Yiddish inflected forms.
