Forms: 1700s meledi, 1700s– miladi, 1700s– milady, 1800s mylady.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French milady; English my lady.
Etymology: Partly < French milady, title used when addressing or speaking of an English lady of high rank (1727 in Voltaire; 1754 as milédi ) < English my lady (see lady n. 3a), and partly representing a colloquial pronunciation of my lady (see above).
