Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: micro- comb. form, -pterous comb. form.
Etymology: < micro- comb. form + -pterous comb. form. Compare scientific Latin micropterus (1802 as genus name, a1826 as specific epithet) and French microptère (noun; 1819 or earlier). Compare also Greek μικρόπτερυξ with small wings (see micropterygious adj.).
Entomology.
Having small or vestigial wings. Cf. brachypterous adj. at brachy- comb. form .
