Etymology: < micro- comb. form + -phyte comb. form. Compare French microphyte (J. Lemaire (1863) in Comptes rendus de l'Acad. des Sciences 57 626). Compare microphytal adj.
Biology.
Any microscopic or very small organism considered (or at one time considered) to belong to the plant kingdom; esp. a microscopic alga. Cf. microzoary n., microzoon n.
