Etymology: Variant of misaunter n., of uncertain origin: compare mishanter n.The form may perhaps represent a remodelling of mishanter n. in a dialect area where /sk/ corresponds to standard English /ʃ/ (ultimately reflecting earlier Scandinavian influence: see S n.¹ and the note s.v. mask n.¹ for further discussion), but this explanation is speculative at best. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (miskɑ·ntəɹ) /mɪsˈkɑːntə(r)/ /mɪsˈkæntə(r)/. The regional distribution of the known examples is limited to areas where the variant with the short vowel would be the expected realization.
