Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mimose.

Etymology: < French mimose (attributed to R. J. Haüy by A. Brongniart 1813, in Jrnl. des mines 34 46) < mime mime n.¹ (in the sense ‘imitator, mimic’, because it sometimes resembles diorite) or its ultimate etymon ancient Greek μῖμος mime n.¹ + -ose , ending of mineral names (compare orthose n.).

Geology. Now historical.

A uniformly greyish coloured rock composed of compact feldspar and pyroxene.
