Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: micro- comb. form, -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < micro- comb. form + -logy comb. form, after post-classical Latin micrologia (a1536 in Erasmus; a1255 in Albertus Magnus in sense ‘smallness of intellect’) < ancient Greek μικρολογία pettiness, hair-splitting, (in plural) minutiae. With sense 2 compare French micrologie treatise concerning microscopic objects (1771). Compare earlier macrology n.
