Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: micro- comb. form, groove n.
Etymology: < micro- comb. form + groove n. (see quot. 1949). Compare French microsillon in same sense (1951).
A very narrow groove on a gramophone record, permitting longer playing times than the wider groove formerly employed; a record having such grooves, or the medium itself. Now also more generally: any very fine groove on a piece of equipment, machinery, etc., esp. as designed to enhance performance. Frequently attributive.
