Etymology: < micro- comb. form + -graph comb. form. In sense 1 probably as shortened form of microphotograph n. or photomicrograph n.; in sense 2 probably as shortened form of microphotograph n. With sense 3 compare earlier micropantograph n. at micro- comb. form 2b(e). Compare earlier micrography n.
1. Originally: a photographic or (rarely) a hand-drawn reproduction of the image of a specimen as viewed under a light microscope; cf. earlier photomicrograph n. Later also: a reproduction of the image of a specimen obtained by other types of microscopy; esp. in electron micrograph n. at electron n.2 Compounds 2. Cf. microphotograph n. 2, photomicrograph n.
