Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: milk n.1, wort n.1
Etymology: < milk n.1 + wort n.1In senses 1 (Lactuca) and 5 (Euphorbia) probably after the milky sap; in sense 2 (Polygala) probably after the milky juice yielded by the roots (see also below); in sense 4 (Pulmonaria) probably after the white markings on the leaves (this plant is also known as Mary-spilt-the-milk ). The plants denoted at senses 2 and 3 (Polygala and Glaux maritima) were prescribed by medieval herbalists to nursing mothers in order to increase lactation; with sense 2 compare Hellenistic Greek πολύγαλον , classical Latin polygala polygala n.

Any of various small plants constituting the genus Polygala (family Polygalaceae) of north temperate regions, having racemes of small, irregular, chiefly blue, purple, pink, or white flowers with petaloid inner sepals, and formerly supposed to increase lactation in nursing mothers; esp. (more fully common milkwort) Polygala vulgaris or (more fully heath milkwort) P. serpyllifolia. Frequently with distinguishing word.
