Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: micro- comb. form, cyst n.
Etymology: < micro- comb. form + cyst n., after German Microcyste (L. Cienkowski 1863, in Jahrbücher f. wissenschaftliche Botanik 3 422). Compare macrocyst n.
1. Mycology and Microbiology. Originally: an encysted myxamoeba with a thick, protective cell wall. Later also: a small, encapsulated resting cell produced by many myxobacteria.
