Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin microcephalus; Greek μικροκέϕαλος.
Etymology: < scientific Latin microcephalus, lit. ‘small-headed’ (used as a specific epithet in zoology and botany from 1775) or its etymon ancient Greek μικροκέϕαλος small-headed < μικρο- micro- comb. form + -κεϕαλος (see -cephalous comb. form). With sense 2 compare hydrocephalus n. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (məikrose·fălɒ̆s) /maɪkrəʊˈsɛfələs/, with the second element of the plural (-se·făləi) /-ˈsɛfəlaɪ/.
