Cullen Élémens de méd. pratique II. 508) < micro- micro- comb. form + -céphale ( < classical Latin -cephalus (in e.g. cynocephalus cynocephalus n.) or ancient Greek κεϕαλή head: see cephal- comb. form), perhaps after scientific Latin microcephalus small-headed (see microcephalus n.). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (məikrose·fēⁱl) /maɪkrəʊˈsɛfeɪl/.
