Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Micmac.
Etymology: < French Micmac (1696; also 1703 as Mickemac, 1713 as Micmaque, 1726 as Micmack) < Micmac mi'kmaq (singular mi'kmaw) allies.The form Mi'kmaq (plural, with singular Mi'kmaw) is the preferred term of self-designation among certain Micmac communities. The Micmac form can also be transcribed mi:kmaγ, more closely representing the phonemes involved.
