Etymology: < Portuguese milho millet (965 and 1009 in Latin texts in form milio , from 13th cent. in Portuguese texts) < post-classical Latin millium (4th cent. or earlier), alteration (see note) of classical Latin milium (see milium n.¹). Compare Spanish mijo (1219), Catalan mill (c1200). Compare also mealie n.The long vowel of the first syllable of post-classical Latin milium (as indicated by its Romance reflexes) and the -ll- of the variant millium are probably due to association with classical Latin mīlle, mīle thousand (plural mīlia, mīlia), because of the large number of grains produced by the plant.

Obsolete.
