Etymology: < German Metagnom (1932 in the passage translated in quot. 1933) < meta- meta- prefix + ancient Greek γνώμη intelligence (see gnome n.1), probably after French métagnomie metagnomy n. Compare earlier metagnomic adj. and metagnomy n.
