Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: meta- prefix, -genesis comb. form.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + -genesis comb. form; apparently coined by R. Owen (see quot. 1849 at sense 1) to contrast with metamorphosis n.; compare earlier epigenesis n. and the parallel formation parthenogenesis n. In sense 2 after Russian metagenez; compare later catagenesis n. and diagenesis n. Compare also metagenetic adj.
