单词 merops
释义

meropsn.

Brit. /ˈmɛrɒps/, U.S. /ˈmɛrɑps/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin merops.
Etymology: < classical Latin merops < ancient Greek μέροψ bee-eater, of uncertain origin. There may be some connection between ancient Greek μέροψ bee-eater and ancient Greek Μέροπες , the name of the inhabitants of Cos (after their eponymous hero, Μέροψ ). There are a number of similar pairs of names of birds and names of peoples in ancient Greek, as δρύοψ a kind of woodpecker and Δρύοπες inhabitants of southern Euboea; the suffix -οψ may be Thraco-Phrygian or Macedonian in origin. The connection, if any, with ancient Greek μέροπ- , μέροψ in the Homeric formula μερόπων ἀνθρώπων is unclear (compare merop adj. and meropic adj.). This phrase was interpreted in antiquity as meaning ‘of articulate speech’, being derived by folk etymology from the stem of μείρεσθαι to divide (see mero- comb. form1) + ὄψ voice (see opeidoscope n.).
Originally: the European bee-eater, Merops apiaster. Now usually (in form Merops): the genus (family Meropidae) containing this and most other bee-eaters; a bird of this genus.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 117.
