Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mezereon.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mezereon (14th cent. in a British source) < Arabic māzariyūn , perhaps < Persian māzaryūn or a similar form in another Iranian language. In sense 2 after post-classical Latin cortex mezerei. The word was borrowed into post-classical Latin from medieval Arabic medical writings; the Arabic word is given by Ḥunayn bin Isḥāq (9th cent.) in a translation of Dioscorides (see materia medica n.) as equivalent to Hellenistic Greek χαμελαία. Compare Italian mezereo (1499), Middle French, French mézéreon (1538), Spanish mecereón (1611).
