Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: Mexican adj.; French Mexique.
Etymology: Either shortened < Mexican adj. (compare -ic suffix), or < French Mexique Mexico (1568 or earlier in Middle French, also in form Mexicque ; < Spanish México : see Mexican n. and adj.), apprehended as an adjective in -ique -ic suffix (the corresponding adjective in French is Mexicain ). Compare earlier Mexican adj.
Chiefly poetic and literary.
= Mexican adj.Quot. 19342 is in allusion to Marvell.
