Etymology: < Mewar, the name of a former state, also known as Udaipur, in north-western India, now part of the state of Rajasthan (probably ultimately < Sanskrit Medapāṭa < Meda : see Meo n. and adj.) + -i suffix2.Mewar was the place name for the original place of settlement of the Meos; by the Muslim period they had apparently moved to Mewat: compare Mewati n. and adj.
