Origin: A borrowing from Turkish. Etymon: Turkish Mevlevi.
Etymology: < Turkish Mevlevi < Arabic mawlawī , use as noun of denominal adjective < mawlā lord, master (see mullah n.), after Mawlānā (Turkish Mevlânâ ), sobriquet of Mawlānā Jalāl al-Dīn Rūmī (1207–73), Persian poet and mystic, from whom the Mevlevi order (Arabic Mawlawiyya ) takes its name: see maulana n. and compare Encycl. Islam (new ed., 1991) at Mawlawiyya.

An order of Sufi dervishes; a member of this order.The religious dancing of the Mevlevi, stimulating ecstasies, led them to be known widely in the West as ‘dancing’ or ‘whirling dervishes’ (see dervish n.).
