Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic maṭrān.
Etymology: < Arabic maṭrān (also in forms miṭrān , muṭrān ; plural maṭārina , maṭārīn ) metropolitan, archbishop, perhaps < post-classical Latin metropolitanus (see metropolitan n. 1a).
Christian Church. Now rare.
(The title of) a bishop, esp. a high-ranking one, in the indigenous Churches of the Middle East. Cf. metropolitan n. 1a.
