Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from German. Etymons: French méthylal, German Methylal.

Etymology: < French méthylal or German Methylal (although these are attested slightly later: F. Malaguti, 1839 in Comptes rendus de l'Acad. des Sci. 8 199 and Ann. der Pharm. 29 88, respectively), shortened < German Formomethylal (J. Dumas 1838, in Ann. der Pharm. 27 135) < formo- (formo- comb. form) + methyl- (in Methylen methylene n.) + -al (in Acetal acetal n.).

Chemistry.

Dimethoxymethane, (CH₃O)₂CH₂, a colourless, volatile, pungent liquid, used as a solvent and formerly as an anaesthetic. Also called formal.
