单词 merling
释义

merlingn.

Brit. /ˈməːlɪŋ/, U.S. /ˈmərlɪŋ/
Forms: Middle English marlyng, Middle English merkyng (transmission error), Middle English merleng, Middle English 1600s–1700s 1900s– merling, Middle English–1500s marlynge, Middle English–1500s merlinge, Middle English–1500s merlyng, Middle English–1500s merlynge, 1700s merlin; Scottish pre-1700 merling, pre-1700 murlȝeon.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French merlenc.
Etymology: < Old French merlenc (12th cent.; Middle French, French merlan (1530)), perhaps < classical Latin merula (see merle n.1) + Old French -enc , suffix forming nouns, ultimately of Germanic origin (compare -ing suffix3). Compare post-classical Latin merlingus (from 1236 in British sources; also merlengus), Anglo-Norman merlin, merling (14th cent.), Middle Dutch merlinc, Italian merlango, merlano (1834).The relationship between the forms cited above and Old Occitan merlus (13th cent.), Middle French, French merlus (14th cent.), and Spanish merluza (14th cent.), all in sense ‘whiting’, is unclear.
Now rare.
The whiting, Merlangus merlangus.
