Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: German Merissa; Arabic marīsa.
Etymology: < German Merissa (1843 in the passage translated in quot. 1844) and its etymon Arabic marīsa a kind of beer < marasa to soak.
A kind of beer made in Sudan from fermented maize.
