Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μέρισματ-, μέρισμα separated part ( < the stem of μερίζειν to divide (see merismus n.) + -ισμα : see -ism suffix) + -ic suffix. Compare French mérismatique (1868 in Littré).

Chiefly Botany. Now rare.

Of cell division: occurring by the formation of internal partitions (as in plant cells). Of a cell, tissue, etc.: characterized by cell division.Superseded in modern use by meristematic.
