Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: meta- prefix, -trophic comb. form.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + -trophic comb. form, in sense 2 after German metatroph ( A. Fischer Vorlesungen über Bakterien (1897) v. 47).
Biology.
1. Designating a change in form or proportion of parts of an organism during its lifetime, esp. as supposed to contribute to adaptation leading to Lamarckian evolution. Obsolete.

2. Of an organism: dependent on organic substances for nutrition (largely superseded by heterotrophic). Now rare.
