Dumas et al. 1847, in Comptes Rendus de l'Acad. des Sciences 25 781). Compare slightly later metacetic adj. N.E.D. (1906, s.v. Metacetone) gives the pronunciation of the second element as (-æsĭtǫ·nik) /-æsɪˈtɒnɪk/.
