Etymology: < post-classical Latin metacarpus (1363 in Chauliac as methacarpus ), altered form of metacarpium (see metacarpion n.). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation as (metăkā·ɹpɒ̆s) /mɛtəˈkɑːpəs/.
Anatomy and Zoology.
Originally: the part of the human hand that is located between the wrist (carpus) and the fingers; spec. the five cylindrical bones of this part of the hand. Later also: the corresponding part of the manus in other vertebrates.
