Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Metabola.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Metabola ( H. Burmeister Handbuch der Entomologie I. (1832)) < neuter plural of Hellenistic Greek μεταβόλος (see metabolon n.¹), as an altered form, with etymologically more correct ending, of the earlier scientific Latin Metabolia (W. E. Leach 1817, in Zool. Misc. III. 58).

Entomology. Now rare.

With plural agreement. A major division of insects comprising all those which undergo metamorphosis (now usually treated as the subclass Pterygota). Formerly also (more narrowly): †a division comprising insects which undergo complete metamorphosis (now usually called Holometabola) (obsolete). Cf. Ametabola n., hemimetabola n.
