Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French abscision (French abscision , (now usually) abscission ) act of cutting something off or away (1155 in Old French as abscisiun in sense ‘apocope’, beginning of the 16th cent. in a medical context in sense ‘amputation’) and its etymon classical Latin abscīsiōn-, abscīsiō omission of the last letter or syllable of a word, rhetorical device in which the speaker comes to a sudden halt, loss of voice, in post-classical Latin also act of cutting off (Vetus Latina), castration (4th cent.), excommunication (6th cent.) < abscīs- , past participial stem of abscīdere abscise v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare later abscission n., which shows considerable semantic overlap.
