Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish merienda.
Etymology: < Spanish merienda (13th cent.) < classical Latin merenda light afternoon meal (see merenda n.). Compare merenda n. (and also example s.v. of borrowing of the corresponding Portuguese form merenda).Compare the following isolated use, apparently < the corresponding Spanish verb merendar (which occurs in the passage translated):1622 J. Mabbe tr. M. Alemán Rogue ii. 282 Now they were beginning to fall to their merendar, or inter-mealary repast.
In Spanish-speaking contexts: a light meal, esp. one taken in the afternoon.
