Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μεριδάρχης.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μεριδάρχης (attested, as are its derivatives, in the Septuagint and other texts from Hellenistic Egypt and Judaea) < ancient Greek μεριδ- , μερίς part (see mero- comb. form1; the sense ‘region, province’ is Hellenistic) + -άρχης -arch comb. form1.The plural form meridarchai is after the expected Greek plural form μεριδάρχαι, although this is not attested in surviving records.
Ancient History. rare.
A provincial governor in the Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires.In quot. 1866 with reference to 1 Maccabees 10:65.
