Etymology: < mercurial adj. + -ist suffix. Compare Middle French mercurialiste (adjective) under the influence of the planet Mercury (1549), having a taste for commerce (1596).In quot. 1566 at sense 1, paraphrasing classical Latin Mercuriale..cognomen Mercurial nickname (Horace Satires 2. 3). The speaker is called ‘Mercurial’ by the traders on the crowded street corners in recognition of his business acumen, Mercury being the god of commerce and good luck.
Now historical and rare.
1. A person born under the influence of the planet Mercury; a person having the qualities attributed to such a birth, esp. eloquence, ingenuity, or aptitude for trade. Also occasionally with unfavourable connotation: a sharper, a thief.
