Etymology: < Chinese Miáozǐ (Wade-Giles transcription Miaotzû ), derogatory term for the Miao people < Miáo Miao adj. and n. + child, small thing (used disparagingly).The Miao ethnic minority in the People's Republic of China is now officially known as Miáozú ( < Miáo + race, people, nationality), but this is unrelated to the form in -tzu, which represents an earlier transcription of Chinese .
