mestome sheath n. [after German Mestomscheide (S. Schwendener 1890, in Sitzungsber. der Preuss. Akad. der Wissensch.: Phys.-Math. Kl. 22 405) < Mestom mestome n. + Scheide (see sheath n.¹)] a sheath of relatively thick-walled cells, without chloroplasts, situated within the parenchymatous bundle sheath in certain grasses (in quot. 1925 used mistakenly for the parenchymatous sheath).
