A pre-Roman language known from several hundred inscriptions (mostly funerary) found in the Salentine peninsula of south-eastern Italy (modern Apulia), which are written in two similar alphabets, both of Greek origin. Also called Messapian.Often identified or compared with Illyrian, about which, however, little is known; the language is clearly Indo-European but not a member of the Italic group. ΚΠ 1932 W. L.
