Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian mezzatinta.
Etymology: Irregularly (perhaps after mezzo-relievo n., or Italian tinto, adjective: see tinto adj. and n.2) < Italian mezzatinta (17th cent. in sense 2, a1543 denoting a shade between light and dark) < mezza , feminine of mezzo half (see mezzo adv.) + tinta tint, dye (a1237: see tint n.1); perhaps via Dutch or German (see quot. 1662 at sense 2 and note s.v. mezzotint n. 2). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (medzoti·nto) /mɛdzoˈtɪnto/.
