Origin: Probably a borrowing from Welsh. Perhaps partly a borrowing from French. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Welsh merched, merch; French merchet; Latin mercheta, merchetum.
Etymology: Probably < Old Welsh merched, plural of merch daughter, girl, wife (attested from 12th cent.: see marry v.), perhaps via Anglo-Norman merchet (13th cent. or earlier) or post-classical Latin mercheta, merchetum, marchettum (from 13th cent. in British sources; late 12th cent. as mercheitum). Compare Welsh gobr merch merchet (14th cent.).It is uncertain whether the following earlier instances should be taken as showing the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word:a1189 Customs Newcastle-upon-Tyne in W.
