Etymology: < Old English Mercena, genitive of Merce Mercians (see Mercian adj.) + law n.1In later use the first element was sometimes reanalysed as an adjective with sense ‘of or relating to Marcia’, the name Marcia having been ascribed to a legendary British queen fictively posited as the original lawgiver (compare quot. a1387 at sense 1 and quot. 1543 at Mercian adj.).
Obsolete (historical in later use).
