Etymology: Either aphetic < amercement n., or < Anglo-Norman merciment (early 14th cent.), Anglo-Norman and Middle French merciement (1380; 1276 in Old French in sense ‘pardon’), aphetic < amerciment , amerciement amercement n. Compare later merciament n.
Obsolete (Scottish in later use).
An amercement, an (adjudged) punishment. Also: the judgement, disposal, or discretion of a stated person or body (cf. mercy n. 4b).
