Originally: the part of the head of a metameric invertebrate that is located behind the mouth (cf. prostomium n.). Later also: the body of an annelid, comprising the segments between the head and the pygidium.

1979 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) B. 285 230 The [polychaete] body is divided into four units, prostomium, peristomium, metastomium or trunk which consists of a variable number of setigerous segments, and pygidium.
1992 M. Stachowitsch Invertebr. 257/2 Metastomium, segmented division of body between head and pygidium; may be regionated into thorax and abdomen. Term has also been applied to part of head behind mouth.
