Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: meta- prefix, -plasia comb. form.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + -plasia comb. form, after German Metaplasie (R. Virchow: see note below) or French métaplasie (1869 in a translation of Virchow). Compare ancient Greek μεταπλάσσειν to mould into a new form. In sense 2 after German myeloiden Metaplasie (1913); compare French métaplasie médullaire (1921). Compare hyperplasia n.German Metaplasie was first used by Rudolph (Carl) Virchow (1821–1902), German pathologist, physician and statesman, in a lecture on the theory of cellular pathology given at the University of Berlin in 1858.

(originally) extramedullary haematopoiesis; (later also) a syndrome characterized by fibrosis of the bone marrow with anaemia, presence of misshapen and immature blood cells in the circulation, and prominent extramedullary haematopoiesis, esp. in the spleen and liver.
