Etymology: < scientific Latin Metaphyta (in Haeckel Natürliche Schöpfungs-Geschichte (1889) (ed. 8) ii. xvii. 420 (table)) < meta- meta- prefix + ancient Greek ϕυτά , plural of ϕυτόν a plant (see phyton n.), after Protophyta n. Compare Metazoa n.

Biology.

In form Metaphyta; with plural (or occasionally singular) agreement. The multicellular plants, as constituting a taxonomic or phylogenetic group; (with plural agreement, also metaphyta) multicellular plants (collectively or individually); metaphytes.
