Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin abscīs-, abscīdere.
Etymology: < classical Latin abscīs-, past participial stem of abscīdere to cut off, to separate, remove < abs- (see ab- prefix) + caedere to cut down (see caesura n.). In sense 2 after abscision n. (see sense 2 at that entry, and compare slightly later abscission n. 3, and also earlier abscissed adj. at absciss v. Derivatives). Compare Middle French (rare) absciser to cut off or away (sporadically attested in the 14th and 15th centuries). Compare earlier abscision n. and later absciss v. Compare also excise v.1, incise v.

1. transitive. Chiefly Surgery. To cut off or away; to perform abscission on. Cf. abscission n. 2.
