Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μεταϕραστικός , -ally suffix.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek μεταϕραστικός metaphrastic adj. + -ally suffix. Compare post-classical Latin metaphrasticos , adverb (4th cent.), Byzantine Greek μεταϕραστικῶς . Compare earlier metaphrasis n. and paraphrastically adv.In quot. 1577 the phrase metaphrastically to alter translates Hellenistic Greek μεταϕράσαι , aorist infinitive of μεταϕράζειν to paraphrase (see metaphrasis n.).
