Etymology: < mercantile adj. + -ity suffix. Compare French mercantilité (1828). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mə̄·ɹkăntilĭti) /mɜːkənˈtɪlɪti/.
Now rare.
The quality of being mercantile (often somewhat pejoratively); enthusiasm or fondness for bargaining.
