Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Mephistopheles.
Etymology: < Mephistopheles, the name of the evil spirit to whom (in the German legend) Faust sold his soul. The origin of the name is uncertain and disputed. It appears first in German in the spelling Mephostophiles in the Faustbuch (1587); the spelling Mephistopheles (and likewise the shortened form Mephisto) are after Goethe's usage in Faust (the first part of which was published in 1808 and the second in 1832).
A fiendish person, esp. one who traps another into adopting a disastrous or destructive course of action; a tempter.
