Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Menura.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Menura, genus name (T. Davies 1802, in Trans. Linn. Soc. 6 207) < ancient Greek μήνη moon n.¹ + οὐρά tail (see uro- comb. form²), with reference to the characteristic markings on the birds' tail-feathers, described by Davies as ‘crescent-shaped spots’.

Ornithology.

A genus of Australian birds comprising the lyrebirds, which constitutes the family Menuridae; (also menura) a bird of this genus, esp. Menura novaehollandiae; a lyrebird.
